Peyton Holland, Executive Director of North Carolina SkillsUSA North Carolina, selected CVCC’s chapter to be a part of ceremony, because of the chapter’s very active involvement in SkillsUSA.

CVCC won the Outstanding Chapter Competition at the 2016 SkillsUSA National Championships held in Louisville. The chapter was also recognized as SkillsUSA Chapter of Distinction, which was the first time that a North Carolina postsecondary chapter was recognized for this honor.

“We were honored that Stanley Black & Decker and Lowe’s selected SkillsUSA to receive these tools,” said Holland.  “They will help us make a difference in several students’ lives.  As SkillsUSA works to impact America’s future workforce through the development of personal, workplace, and technical skills, we strive to develop partnerships that unite industry and education.

“I wanted to make sure that our partners at Stanley Black & Decker and Lowe’s were able to spend time with the heart of our organization: our students and teachers. It was an honor to introduce them to one of our strongest chapters at CVCC. CVCC works hard to ensure that their students get the most they can from their SkillsUSA experience from on-campus leadership development events to participating in skill and leadership competitions,” said Holland.

Lowe’s Home Improvement and DeWalt are proud supporters of the SkillsUSA, donating tools for many of the regional, state and national competitions.

Through the generous financial support of the CVCC Foundation, Inc., students receive the opportunity to participate in valuable career preparation experiences through SkillsUSA. David Sain, chairman of the CVCC Foundation, and retired Lowe’s Home Improvement executive, attended the presentation.

SkillsUSA is an opportunity for high-performance students to match skills against their peers in leadership, teamwork, citizenship, character development, and discipline specific competition. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills. SkillsUSA also promotes understanding of the free-enterprise system and involvement in community service.

CVCC’s SkillsUSA chapter also won three gold medals in the National Championships held this past spring in Louisville, Ky. The team finished second in the country in two other categories and third in another. In addition, CVCC students finished in the top eight in the country in eight other competitions.
