Long View resident Megan Marlowe recently received the 2016 President’s Award at Catawba Valley Community College. The honor is awarded for outstanding scholarship, leadership and college and community service.

Marlowe earned a business administration associate degree in 2015 and recently completed her entrepreneurship associate degree.

A native of Craigsville, W. Va., Megan found herself unemployed several years ago. With only a high school education, she found it “beyond difficult to find employment.” Operating a business had always appealed to her, so she pursued a business degree at CVCC.

The knowledge and experience gained through her extracurricular activities helped her develop that idea into a full-fledged business plan. She believes making that idea a reality would never have been possible without her experience at CVCC.

She plans to use everything she has learned and experienced at CVCC to start her own gaming business.

Marlowe served as president of the Student Government Association for the 2015-16 academic year. She is past president and treasurer of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society chapter. She has attended numerous PTK regional and state conferences and won numerous chapter awards for the service projects and chapter achievements.

She is a graduate of CVCC’s Student Leadership Academy and was chosen to attend the North Carolina Student Leadership Development Program in Raleigh.

She received the 2014 Award of Excellence and Certificate of Excellence in Recognition of Distinguished Achievement in regional programs. She was named Student of the Semester in 2014 and has competed at the state level with SkillsUSA. She has also been named to the Honors and High Honors List numerous times during her time at CVCC.

“Had I not attended CVCC, I wouldn’t be the person that I am now, and I am very proud of who I have become during my time here,” said Marlowe.

As a non-voting member of the CVCC Board of Trustees, CVCC President Dr. Garrett D. Hinshaw had many opportunities to work with Marlowe and witness her transformation.

“Watching Megan grow into a leader through her experiences inside and outside the classroom has been an honor,” said Dr. Hinshaw. “These transformations continue to inspire us every day on campus.”
