Home schools continue to grow in numbers in Catawba County

Flexibility and freedom are just some of the reasons thousands of families have turned to home schools for their children’s educational needs.

Thirty years ago there were 381 home schools in North Carolina, serving 809 students, according to statistical data from the state’s Division of Non-Public Education. Ten years later, the number jumped to 8,171 home schools and 13,801 students.

Those numbers continued to increase exponentially and in the 2015-16 school year, there were 74,653 home schools with 118,268 students. In Catawba County, 1,142 home schools were registered for the 2015-16 schools year with 1,858 students.
