From car wrecks to births, Tommy Poovey has seen it all.

For 30 years as a full-time member of Catawba County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), he showed up to help people through some of their worse moments in life. He retired just more than a year ago at 52, but he wasn’t ready to completely walk away.

Poovey has volunteered a couple of times every week since retirement.

“I spent my entire life doing this, and once you retire and try to get away from it, you realize it’s still going to draw you back,” Poovey said. “I’m still giving back to the community. It’s in your blood.”

Poovey graduated from Fred T. Foard High in 1982, and then went to Catawba Valley Community College for the paramedic program.
