Eighth-grade students from River Bend Middle got a chance to see what the world of engineering and manufacturing is all about during the Education Matters Extreme STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) tour in March.

More than 240 students loaded up buses to visit local businesses like Century Furniture, Hickory Airport, Pepsi, Concept Frames, Lee Industries and the Manufacturing Solutions Center. The students also got a tour of Catawba Valley Community College’s STEM-related departments and visited Conover Station where they heard a presentation from Duke Energy.

The tour had a practical focus as well, helping students learn about STEM careers and about local post-secondary education and training through Catawba Valley Community College, the N.C. Center for Engineering Technologies and the military, according to an Education Matters press release.
